Old versions of Skype for Mac, especially Classic 7.59 and below always had a feature difference when compared with the Windows equivalent. But you won’t find that gap if you download Skype 8, the latest build of the app for macOS. The design of the new Skype for Mac may not be pleasing for some, but I like the visual similarity across all platforms. Skype 7.59.37 is the last version of the old Skype app in macOS, also known as the Classic Skype. Unfortunately, Microsoft started limiting sign-in through Skype classic since April 2019, and the following method no-longer works.

Skype Business for Mac is not a download for regular users. However, those who are using Skype 8 may contact and make video calls with the business customers after adding them as a contact. If you or your company has an Office 365 premium (business) subscription, you may want to download the app on your system; a link to the macOS version is below.

Many of the collaboration tools available in the Windows version of Skype for Business is not there in macOS. Still, the latest edition of Skype for business, 16.27 is an excellent choice for group audio/video calls and online meetings. Microsoft has already announced plans to discontinue Skype for business and move all it’s features to the Teams application, in the near future. But as of now, macOS users don’t have an alternative to Skype for business. They may continue using it until Microsoft Teams get a standalone installer on macOS.
How to install Skype for Mac 8.53
Skype is not listed in the macOS app store. Therefore one need to download Skype for Mac 8.53 directly from Microsoft webpage listed above and install it manually.
After this, you may click on the Launchpad and scroll through app list to confirm whether Skype has been installed on not. The first time when you launch the Skype 8 app on Mac OS, the system may prompt a message “Skype is an app downloaded from the internet.” Just press Open and proceed with login.

The Skype for Business on Mac client requires Mac OS X El Capitan and higher, and uses at least 100MB of disk space. We support the use of all built-in audio and video devices. External devices must be in the Skype for Business Solutions Catalog.
Note
This list is preliminary and some devices may be qualified for Lync, but not supported on Skype for Business on the Mac.Refer to the System requirements for the minimum hardware required.
Legacy Mac clients
Skype for Business Server 2015 also supports the following legacy clients on computers that are running Mac OS 10.5.8 or latest service pack or release (Intel-based) operating systems (Mac OS 10.9 operating system is not currently supported). Infrastructure requirements for Skype for Business on Mac
The Skype for Business on Mac client leverages both the Unified Communications Management Platform (UCMP) as well as the Unified Communications Web API (UCWA) that our mobility clients use.
The client has the same requirements as our mobility clients in that you must have an Access Edge Server and Reverse Proxy deployed in a supported configuration.
Authentication
The Skype for Business on Mac client supports Cert-based authentication, Microsoft Modern Authentication, and Multi-Factor Authentication when deployed and enabled.
Note
Due to a current limitation, the user's Exchange credentials must be the same as their Skype for Business credentials.
Certificates
Certificates in use on the Access Edge, Reverse Proxy and Front End servers must not use the SHA-512 hash algorithm.
The HTTP Certificate Revocation List must be defined and accessible by the client. For example, we don't support an LDAP entry in the certificate as your Certificate Revocation List.
DNS
Mobility must be properly deployed for the Skype for Business on the Mac client to function properly. A common failure scenario is to have both of the following DNS entries resolvable on the internal network:
